I dropped Oscar off at the hotel. I did a cursory examination outside, while he went in and checked out the hotel and his room. Not that it made much difference. As soon as I was gone, Rook would have someone pick him up to take him to the safe house.

Neither of us found anything, but that didn’t make the doubts go away. Sure, I’d done my best to watch the roads, and hadn’t seen anyone following, but then again, I hadn’t noticed the unsub hanging around Columns, either.

Oscar came back outside, his gaze scanning the nearby people. He strolled over to the car, bent over, and stuck his head in the window. “Room is clean. No one in the lobby seemed overly concerned with my presence.”

“I don’t see anything out here either.”

“So, not to add any more to your plate, but…” He ran a hand over the back of what little neck he had. “Well, if you were followed last week, what makes you think he won’t decide I’m a better target? Maybe I could lead him to someone he could use as leverage to get what he wants.”

Yeah, the thought had occurred to me. Constantly. There were too many variables here that none of us had any control over.

“I think he’s too single-minded to be distracted now. He shouldn’t know who you are, so I’ll be his main focus.”

“And if you’re wrong?”

“Then you’d better be as good as you claim.” My stomach churned. “I’m trusting them to you, O. You’ve got my number if—”

He waved a hand. “Yes, Mom. And the number of the fire department, emergency squad, poison control, and another babysitter in case I get sick.”

I was out of the car and on him in seconds. I shoved him up against the wall, the impact not even making him grunt. “Listen to me, you son of a bitch, this is their lives I’m putting in your hands. Don’t fucking joke or dick around.”

He stood there and stared at my hands on his jacket.

“So you know,” he rumbled, “I consider us friends. It’s the only thing that’s keeping me from putting you through this wall. Unless you’re going to suck my dick, you don’t touch me. Ever. Do I make myself perfectly clear?”

His tone would have made most people wet themselves. I wasn’t most people.

I released my hold on him and stepped back. “If you can’t take this seriously, then say so. I’ll go take care of them myself.”

Oscar’s expression softened. Which only meant the anger wasn’t nearly as pronounced. “Bro, you know I’m going to do my job. I get you’re worried about them, but I promise, I will never let you down. Now, get going. You’ve got some pervert’s ass to kick.”

Part of me wished I hadn’t agreed to go on the assignment, but Sammy would have a fit if I didn’t protect these kids from Elijah. I gave a sharp nod, turned, and took two steps before Oscar called out to me. I spun around and noted the expression on his face: equal parts anger and sadness.
